Okay, so I was going to write about my time with the rented Sony 200mm lens for this post, but I didn't have time to get any post out, let alone finish editing the photos so I can really say what I think of the lens.
So you can get a 5mbps connection with three connections running at about 1.8mbps (with some expected variable flux). The LU-200 we rented had 2 internal sim cards and one external USB modem - the two internals were AT&T and T-Mobile, and the external was Verizon.
If all that connectivity wasn't cool enough, it would balance the load based on the available signal, so if Verizon dropped down to 700kbps, the other two picked up the slack and transmitted around 2.1mbps. Basically - all the tech talk aside, it keeps a solid signal going back to your destination - in the case of most of my testing, Facebook Live. Its really amazing, it basically means that for most applications you don't necessarily need a live truck or a sat truck, or other bulky expensive hardware. It also means you can transmit while moving - and that's where I get really interested in this device, it opens up a "new" way of storytelling in a live situation. And yes, I tested that - I hooked up my gopro to the box and drove to a nearby park - check it out:
Oh, and of course - the facebook live for our client went just about flawlessly and looked amazing. The setup was an Fs7 plugged directly into the LiveU unit, with a silk overhead and reflectors for lighting. I was only on set as the encoding tech (they were shooting a much bigger documentary project), so I didn't stay for the whole shoot, but it looks like they got some awesome footage from the day.
And that pretty much wraps it up for this post.
Next week (or sooner if I get the downtime) I'll try and get my thoughts organized about the Sony lens.
